The College Application Workshop for the class of 2011

Series One: The Basics
Section 1: Monday, June 14th; Wednesday, June 16th; Monday June 21st; Wednesday, June 23rd: 9:30am to 11:30am
Section 2: Tuesday, June 15th; Thursday, June 17th; Tuesday, June 22nd; Thursday, June 24th: 5:30pm to 7:30pm

  • The List: Understanding and formulate a realistic college list based on a student’s personal preference and academic profile
  • Timeline: Becoming familiar with the deadlines of the application process and how to remain organized during this important time
  • The Application: Learning details of the Common, University of California, California State, and Universal Applications and how to fill them out properly
  • Decisions: Gaining awareness of your options and what they entail: Early Decision, Early Action, Rolling

Series Two
Section 1: Tuesday, July 6th; Thursday, July 8th; Tuesday July 13th; Thursday, July 15th: 9:30am to 11:30am

  • Essays: Selecting interesting and engaging topics for college essays; understanding the college admission personal statement and short answer prompts
  • College Visits: Creating a methodology to visiting campuses and getting the most out of your experience there
  • Resumes: Crafting a detailed list of your life experiences and activities highlighting what colleges look for
  • Letters of Recommendation: Planning ahead by comprehending the who, what, where, when, and how of one of the most significant parts of your application.

Academic Workshops - Summer 2010

As students come to us for tutoring needs during the school year, we have come to realize that what many students need is help developing skills that are required at the high school level and beyond.  This summer we are providing an expanded list of academic workshops to help students develop the skills they need to perform better in school.  All of our workshops are led by one of our experienced tutors, all of whom have a bachelor’s degree at a minimum and have specialized expertise in their subject areas.  For more information about any of our workshops, please contact Katie Kemp at 650-401-6140 x112 or at Katie@buckleyedgroup.com

Read Between the Lines: Critical Reading and Inference Skills

Ever thought you were really prepared for a test and then didn’t do as well as you thought you would?  This may be because you need to sharpen up your critical reading and inference skills.  Often times, problems and questions can be phrased or presented in a variety of ways.  You may have to use what you are given and make inferences on your own to come up with the correct answer.  We will be offering this workshop for Literature, Math, and Science.  All three of these workshops are designed to help you improve your inference skills and be better equipped to attack those difficult problems that don’t give you all the information you need right up front. 

English Fundamentals

Quick! What’s the subject of this sentence and what is the verb and do they agree and am I using proper punctuation?  Not sure?  Maybe it’s time for some basic grammar review.  Understanding the basic rules and structures of the English language are an important part of a good writer’s repertoire.  Attend this workshop and feel confident that the work you produce shows your intellect in its best light.

Math Foundations: Refresher Math Course for rising 9th and 10th Graders

If you ever feel frustrated with math because it seems like you just cannot keep up with the class, you may need to take a few steps back and feel confident with the basic concepts that more complex math is based on.  In order to tackle more complex material in math, a student needs to understand the basic mathematical concepts first.  This is why we are providing this workshop this summer.  Attend and build that foundation you need to feel confident with the more challenging math you will encounter in high school.

New Beginnings: Study and Organizational Skills

Have you ever missed a couple days of school or messed up on a big test and found yourself playing catch up the rest of the quarter?  Small slip ups during the school year happen so quickly and easily it seems, yet fixing them can sometimes seem close to impossible.  Buckley Education Center wants to help students avoid these slip ups and stay on top of their school work for the 2010-2011 school year with our Study and Organization Skills Workshop.   Enroll in this workshop and gain the tools and advice you need to start the school year off organized and to stay that way throughout the school year.

Transitions: Preparing to make the step from Junior High to High School

Making the transition from junior high to high school can be a challenging one.  Starting your high school experience off prepared and geared with the skills and knowledge you need will help to make your experience a more enjoyable one with less stress.  This is why we put together this workshop.  Come learn how to get organized, how to manage the heavier work load, become an advocate for your academic success, and listen to the advice of juniors and seniors who already lived through the transition.

Word Precision: The basics of writing a solid essay

Wordy essays filled with run on sentences may fill several pages and look like you have eloquently covered the assigned subject, but this is not the proper way to go about writing a solid essay.  The key to writing a good essay is properly organizing your thoughts and presenting them concisely in essay form.  Of course, this fact is much easier said than done, which is why Buckley Education Center is putting on this Essay Workshop.   Enroll today and learn how to master the important skill of good essay writing!

Test Writing 101: Mastering timed essay writing

Tick, tick, tick goes the clock.  There are 10 minutes left before time is up for writing your essay and you have only just finished your introductory paragraph.  You try to quickly finish your essay as you panic about how your test will be graded.  Writing timed essays is a task difficult even to those who are natural writers, but for those of us who really have to work at writing they can be incredibly daunting. Our Test Writing 101 Workshop is designed to guide students through writing a timed essay, giving them advice on how to manage time, brainstorm and organize ideas into a solid essay. 

The Art of Words: Finding your writing style

If you have ever read a good book, you know what good writing style looks like.  Good writers have a way of making words flow easily off the page and conjure up images you can easily picture with those words.  Once you have mastered the basics of writing a solid essay you will want to understand what writing style is and how to find your own style.  This means learning how to express yourself using a variety of words and writing so that your unique personality shines through in your writing.  Attend this workshop and learn about the different styles of writing, gain advice on how to develop your own writing style, and receive practice and feedback for improving your writing skills.

The Wide World of Writing: An introduction to the different types of writing

Whether you are writing to prove a point, explain something, or simply entertain, you will need to know how to do so effectively.  This workshop will explain the different types of writing you will need to be familiar with in your academic career.  Learn how to approach a persuasive essay and understand how it differs from an expository essay.  Expand your writing capabilities and gain practice, insight, and feedback about your writing as you do.

Introduction to AP Sciences

AP level courses require a tremendous amount of work on the student’s end.  In order to stay on top of the rigorous course load, you will need to have the skills necessary to effectively read higher level text books, take notes outside of and during class, and prepare for tests.  Fundamental to AP Sciences is also the labs that go along with them.  This workshop will not only help you with the skills you will need for any AP class, but also introduce you to lab reports and how to take effective notes during your labs.  The workshop will conclude with a sample lab to introduce you to Chemistry, Biology, or Physics.

Summer Reading Groups
Ongoing throughout the summer
Avoid putting off your summer reading until the week before school.  Attending summer reading groups at Buckley Education Center will give you the opportunity to read one of your assigned summer reading books with a group of peers and one of our experienced tutors!  Enroll today and stay on top of your summer reading, improve your critical reading skills, expand your vocabulary, and have a good time reading a good book with your peers!   This workshop will be five, 1 hour sessions and will be scheduled based on each group’s summer schedule.
